Test an extra mouse button before mapping it
Identify mouse events in ThumbPilot, assign an app-specific shortcut and understand the control limits.
Find out what the button sends
ThumbPilot is a mouse utility from Codestripes LLC for macOS 14 or later. Start in its input test area: click the extra button or move a wheel and look at the reported button number or direction. Testing itself does not require Input Monitoring or Accessibility permission.
The mouse reference library can help you find setup information, but an entry is not a compatibility guarantee. Some physical controls do not send mouse events the app can use. Note your mouse model and connection type when investigating an unexpected result.
Choose one useful action
Use an observed extra button event to create a mapping plan. ThumbPilot supports extra button events 3–32 and actions including Copy, Paste, Back, Forward and custom key combinations. Choose a simple action first so its effect is easy to verify with non-sensitive sample content.
Separate plans can apply in different applications. Once mouse control is enabled, the active assignment follows the frontmost application. Matching input is affected across connected mice: version 1 does not distinguish individual physical devices.
Enable control and check the result
Read and acknowledge the control scope before pressing Enable. Actual remapping requires Input Monitoring and Accessibility permissions. Test the chosen action in the intended application and verify that the result matches your plan.
Control–Option–Command–Escape pauses control immediately. It also stays paused after startup, sleep or a session change until you resume it. If an assignment appears inactive after one of those events, check that control has resumed before changing the mapping.
Understand which settings are active controls
Vertical and horizontal wheel speed multipliers and reversal are active controls. Version 1 has no smooth scrolling, and cursor tracking speed remains a system Mouse setting.
Device worksheets for hardware DPI, polling and similar preferences are reference records. Make supported hardware changes in the manufacturer's official tool. Macro steps can be previewed locally but do not execute in other apps.
